Wasps

There are over 30,000 species of wasps. Most of the time they are harmless, but if wasps feel threatened they can become a danger to passerby as they instinctively go into protection mode of their nest . Most people fear wasps because they believe they will sting but a majority are non stinging and solitary insects. Even more interesting is that wasps are actually beneficial as they feed off of other insects, thus providing a natural control within the insect kingdom. Wasps can be distinguished from bees by their pointed lower abdomen and thin centers. Some of the most commonly known wasps are paper wasps (also known as umbrella wasps), yellow jackets and hornets.

Signs of Wasps

Wasps flying near or around your home or yard is always a likely sign there may be a nest nearby. If you notice wasps flying close its a good idea to inspect your homes perimeter and check for nests. Most of time wasps build their nests away from damaging elements. Under siding, behind shutters, underneath roof eaves or overhangs, close to gutters and up in trees are typical places to find wasp nests. Although wasps nests start on the smaller end, when left alone they can grow to the size of a basketball. Most nests resemble a round like shape made from mud or paper looking material.

Concerns for Wasps

Because wasps are protective of their nests they can become very aggressive, posing risk to anyone who may walk by. Larger nests will naturally pose a greater threat as this means more wasps are likely to sting if they feel threatened and unlike bees, wasps will repeatedly sting. This causes the greatest concern as wasps can increase in population quite quickly, and you don’t want to come across an area that has an over abundance of wasps nests.
