Stink Bugs
Stink bugs, also known as shield bugs, are considered to be more of an agricultural pest than a homeowners pest. This is because these bugs do not bite, sting or cause any structural damage to homes. At most, they emit a stinky, unpleasant smell which makes them more of nuisance as they enter homes and offices in large numbers seeking out warmth and shelter for the winter months. For commercial farm owners however, especially those which fruit bearing crops, these pests can be very destructive. It’s important that these pests are removed from the farms property and prevented from returning as they can incur huge losses to farm owners.
Signs of Stink Bugs
Stink bugs usually make themselves known when the fall temperatures begin to cool and they need to seek out shelter for the upcoming winter months. The presence of live or dead bugs can be seen and if there is an infestation, you will likely see them in large numbers.
Live Stink Bugs
Stink bugs have a shield like shape and are usually brown to dark brown in color. If you’ve noticed more than just a few stink bugs within your home it’s possible you may have an infestation. Living stink bugs emit a foul smelling odor that is primarily used to keep away predators such as birds and lizards but when they infest your home in large numbers you are sure to pick up on their scent.
Dead Stink Bugs
Dead stink bugs are likely to be found around entry points in the home when the cooler temperatures set in. Finding some of these dead pests is not necessarily a sign of an infestation, however, if you find more than a few along with live stink bugs than you will want to look into a possible infestation. It’s also important to note that dead stink bugs can still give off that foul smelling odor. If the odor is abnormally strong in an area of your home, call your local pest control company.

Did You Know?
Once a stink bug has found a warm spot it likes, it will release an aggregation pheromone (which can linger for up to a year) that draws other stink bugs to gather in the same area. One study found more than 26,000 of them living in a Maryland home.
