Rodents

Most pests in the Pacific NW are seasonally active and are not active outside of their usual breeding and nesting season. Most rodents however, are active year round. While they do tend to be most active in the Spring and Summer, we are most likely to encounter them in the Fall and Winter, when the change in weather forces them to seek out shelter and infiltrate our homes. Rodents are drawn to warmth and will inhabit the walls, storage spaces, attics and crawl spaces of your home; seeking dry shelter where they can find food and water sources.

Signs of Rodents

Rodents are well known for spreading disease, damaging property and contaminating both human and animal food. If they gain entry into your home or business, they can introduce other unwelcome parasites like fleas, lice and ticks. Acting at the first sign, typically rat droppings, can help to drastically reduce the length of time needed to eliminate the infestation. These rodents are able to breed quickly and a small problem has the potential to develop into a serious issue if left unmanaged.

Things to look out for if you suspect rodents:

  • Droppings resembling a grain of rice
  • Scratching sounds in attics, wall and ceilings or scurrying beneath floor boards and decking
  • Foot and tail marks along dusty areas that are not often used
  • Rips and tears with visible teeth marks or gnawed through wood or wiring
  • Nests made from shredded materials in darkened, less visible spaces
  • Burrows amongst compost heaps, gardens and sheds

Concerns for Rodents

Rodents are known for spreading disease and filth. Exposure to rat droppings and urine, contact with infected debris or a dead carcass, breathing in contaminated dust particles of infected rats or being bit by a rat, as well as eating or drinking food and water that is contaminated with rat urine or fecal matter poses extreme risks to your health. Plague, Weils Disease, Salmonellosis, Rat Bite Fever and the Hantavirus are among some of the diseases rats can carry and affect humans through contact.

Hantavirus infection is usually spread by inhaling the virus, which is in the droppings, urine and saliva of infected rats. Leptospirosis can be contracted through direct contact of urine from infected rodents or through water, soil, or food contaminated with their urine. Without treatment, leptospirosis can lead to kidney and liver damage and even death. Along with disease, rats are destructive to homes and buildings because they gnaw on wood and wire which poses risk of electrical fires as well as structural damage.
