Boxelders

Box Elder insects are named after the Box Elder tree of which they feed off of. Adult Box Elders are black with reddish coloring along the rim of their wings while the juvenile Box Elders have more red than black upon their wings and are rounder in appearance than the adult, which has a more elongated, oval shape. Box Elder insects suck the sap from the Box Elder trees leaves, seeds and shoots and are even known to feed off of other trees such as Ash and Maple, as well as some fruit and seed bearing trees. These insects are typically seen in large numbers reaching the thousands.

Why Do I Have Boxelders

Being that these insects are attracted to certain types of trees like Maple, Ash and the Box Elder tree; if you have these trees around your home it is likely you will see these insects around your property and possibly even invading your home space. Even properties within close proximity to your home can cause these insects to show up at your door. During the spring and summer months these insects are actively searching for food where you are more likely to see them amongst the trees and plants. When the temperature drops, they can become more noticeable around your home because they’ll begin to seek shelter to weather the winter months. Because these insects populate by the thousands, these pesky bugs become a nuisance and even unsightly as they can cover large areas of the exterior of your property.

Concerns for Boxelders

Box Elders are more of an annoyance than anything. They have been known to puncture the skin causing mild irritation, but they are most often unwanted because they swarm in large numbers and become unsightly. If they do get inside your home or office, they become a greater worry because dead Box Elders attract Dermestid beetles, which presents an additional problem. Trying to get rid of these pesky bugs on your own can be difficult as they hide in small cracks and crevices to hibernate during the cooler months and if they come inside your home they are likely to stain walls and material items because of their bright reddish-orange droppings.
